What I'm Listening To . . .

It has been a while since I've written a what I'm listening to column, but its always an easy way to get me jump started back into the blogging spirit. If you like this column, you'd probably also like some of the earlier installments of it that can be found here, here, and here. So let's get right into it.

Empire - The Black Angels If the Velvet Underground's 'All Tomorrow's Parties' and the Doors 'This is the End' had a baby, this song would be their louche, abandoned love child. Cool and intense at the same time. I never quite figured out why the black angels aren't bigger stars than they are.  They have new album coming out September 14th (check their website for a sample track).  Maybe that will do it.

The Black Angels sound like Acid Rock with a darker, post-1970's feel. Highly influenced by the drug induced music of the Vietnam anti-war era, the Black Angels modernize the sound without losing the feeling. When I listen to this track, all I can think of is Martin Sheen putting his hand through the mirror in Apocalypse Now. I have to think that was intentional.

Rebbecca St. Claire - The Modern Skirts  I both love and hate this song, by this Athens, Georgia based quartet.  Crazily enough, the female vocalist who provides the catch to their emergent music blog hit Rebbecca St. Claire isn't even listed in their online press kit.  What's up with that guys?   The song is a play on a mixture of roots folk and indie pop.  From my perspective, I prefer the rootsy chorus to the snarky indie pop lyrics but beggars can't be choosers and this track has the potential to be a stone cold hit (at least in terms of college radio air play).

Don't Look Back into the Sun - The Libertines Between Doing lines with Kate Moss and sharing needles with Amy Winehouse, its easy to forget just what a enormous talent poor tortured Pete Doherty was.  I've hosted this live version performed at the Manchester Ritz, which is actually the file I've been listening too.  The streaming version from the album is available for a quick taste down below. The paparazzi loves Pete for his foibles but he's really just another tragic victim of substance abuse and as of now on the road to be an awful waste of a beautiful and poetic mind.

  1. That Black Angels track is dark and spooky (like the war) - the Modern Skirts is Southern pop (and kinda cute).

Pete is a great songwriter - Down in Albion by Babyshambles is a wonderful album. Too bad he's dogged by the tabs waiting for his next mistake.

    Thanks for sharing the music!
